Demetrius of Thessaloniki

Demetrius lived in the third century and died around 306, during the era of Christian persecution in the Roman Empire. After his martyrdom, he acquired the epithet "the Myroblyte" — the Myrrh-Gusher — for the fragrant oil believed to flow from his relics. Through the Middle Ages his cult grew until he stood as one of the most important warrior-saints in Eastern Orthodoxy, frequently paired with George of Lydda in iconography and devotion.
