Demetrius lived in the third century and died around 306, during the era of Christian persecution in the Roman Empire. After his martyrdom, he acquired the epithet "the Myroblyte" - the Myrrh-Gusher - for the fragrant oil believed to flow from his relics. Through the Middle Ages his cult grew until he stood as one of the most important warrior-saints in Eastern Orthodoxy, frequently paired with George of Lydda in iconography and devotion. The Roman Catholic Church knows him chiefly as Demetrius of Sirmium, commemorating him in April or October depending on the rite, though scholars still argue whether the Thessalonian martyr and the figure venerated in Sirmium are one man or two.
