The man in the LED mouse helmet turned bedroom laptop loops into stadium techno - and refused to pretend the DJ was doing anything more than pressing play. Joel Zimmerman built Deadmau5 on progressive house precision and a troll's honesty about what electronic performance actually is.

About this person

Joel Thomas Zimmerman was born January 5, 1981, and started making electronic music under the name Deadmau5, performing in a custom LED mouse helmet he called the "mau5head". His 2008 album Random Album Title - featuring "Faxing Berlin" and the Kaskade collaboration "I Remember" - went gold in Canada and silver in the UK, earning him his first Juno Award. For Lack of a Better Name followed in 2009 with "Ghosts 'n' Stuff" and the slow-burn masterpiece "Strobe", winning another Juno. He kept the run going with 4×4=12 (2010), Album Title Goes Here (2012) with Gerard Way on "Professional Griefers", and While(1<2) (2014) after leaving Ultra Records. He founded his own label Mau5trap in 2007, formed supergroups Kx5 with Kaskade and Rezzmau5 with Rezz, scored the 2019 film Polar, and has seven Grammy nominations with four Juno wins. His next album is slated for 2026.
