Born June 12, 1915, the youngest child of John D. Rockefeller Jr., David Rockefeller inherited a dynasty but chose the executive suite over the foundation circuit. He rose to chairman and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Corporation, steering the bank through decades when American finance was remaking its global footprint. His real distinguishing trait was the travel: he met foreign leaders on every continent, cultivating political connections that blurred the line between banking and statecraft.
