Born in London in 1966 and educated at Eton and Oxford, Cameron entered Parliament in 2001 and became Conservative leader four years later. The 2010 election made him prime minister at the head of a coalition with the Liberal Democrats, overseeing austerity in the wake of the financial crisis, legalising same-sex marriage, and navigating referendums on voting reform and Scottish independence - both of which went his way. When the Conservatives won outright in 2015, he called the Brexit referendum to settle the Europe question and campaigned to remain. The country voted out in June 2016, and he resigned within hours. He left Parliament that September, spent years away from politics, then returned in 2023 as foreign secretary under Rishi Sunak until the Conservatives lost power in 2024.
