Danjong, personal name Yi Hong-wi, was the sixth monarch of Joseon. He ascended to the throne at the age of 11, upon the death of his sickly father, King Munjong. Three years later, he was forced to abdicate by his uncle, Grand Prince Suyang, and was subsequently put to death after having been demoted to princely rank and exiled. His story is well-known in modern South Korea, where it has been compared to a Shakespearean tragedy.
