Through his leadership bridging engineering and nursing, Oerther has advanced environmental health practice through science diplomacy to solve the problems of planetary health. His early discovery research used 16S ribosomal RNA-targeted techniques for fundamental studies of the ecology of bacteria in engineered and natural systems. His applied practice promotes transdisciplinarity among engineers, nurses, and sanitarians to improve access to clean water, nutritious food, efficient energy use, and financial services in developing communities.
