Born 11 June 1991, Howell started uploading to YouTube under the name danisnotonfire and found an audience drawn to his confessional style and sharp timing. The collaboration with Phil Lester - both personal and professional - became the foundation for a second channel, Dan and Phil, and a run of radio work that took them from a Sunday night entertainment show on BBC Radio 1 in January 2013 through to the station's Internet Takeover slot, which they held until April 2016. By then the duo had become a unit in their own right, and Howell's main channel had become a platform for comedy, commentary, and occasional writing projects. The bedroom-to-broadcast arc landed him in front of millions who'd never heard of him outside a YouTube search.
