King of Wessex
A sixth-century king whose own parentage the records can't agree on. Cynric ruled Wessex for over two decades, but whether he was Cerdic's son or grandson depends which chronicle you read.
Cynric became King of Wessex in 534 and held the throne until 560. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle names him son of Cerdic, the kingdom's founder. But the Anglian King-list and sections of the West Saxon Genealogical Regnal List insert another generation, calling him son of Creoda, Cerdic's son instead. Even Asser's Life of King Alfred splits on the question: the paternal line includes Creoda, the maternal account skips him. Everything known about Cynric comes from these chronicles, and they can't settle who his father was.
