Conrad III was the son of Duke Frederick I of Swabia and Agnes, daughter of Emperor Henry IV. From 1116 to 1120 he held the Duchy of Franconia, then spent 1127 to 1135 as anti-king against Lothair III before finally securing the throne as King of the Romans in 1138. His reign opened the long feud between Guelphs and Ghibellines that would define imperial politics for generations.
