Choi Seung-hee was a leading Korean modern dancer. Choi is an important figure of early modern dance in Korea, Japan and China who gained worldwide fame in the 1930s and 1940s. Widely known as the "Mother of Korean Modern Dance" and the "Dance Princess of the Peninsula," she was the first Korean artist to achieve true global celebrity. Performing under the name Sai Shōki, she created Sinmuyong, a genre that modernized traditional Korean movement for the global stage.
