About

Charles Babbage was born in England on 26 December 1791, a mathematician and mechanical engineer whose range stretched from philosophy to industrial economics. In the early 19th century he invented the Difference Engine, the first mechanical computer, then went further: his Analytical Engine laid out every core idea of modern computing, including programmable memory borrowed from the Jacquard loom's punch cards. He also designed the first computer printers and hosted Saturday evening soirées that made him a fixture of London's scientific social scene, credited with importing the "scientific so…
