About this person
Chandragupta I ruled northern and central India from roughly 319 to 335. He inherited a modest ancestral kingdom and became the first suzerain ruler of what would become the Gupta Empire. The mechanism of that transformation remains uncertain, though historians widely believe his marriage to Kumaradevi, a Licchavi princess, gave him the leverage to expand his political reach. He took the title Mahārājadhirāja - Great King of Kings. His son Samudragupta inherited the throne and pushed the empire's borders farther still.
