Sonnen started fighting in 1997 and spent over a decade climbing the MMA ladder through Pancrase, World Extreme Cagefighting, and eventually the UFC, where he became a top threat at middleweight and light heavyweight. He came close twice - title shots in both divisions - but the belt always slipped away, leaving him with the oddly specific distinction of being one of the best fighters never to win a major championship. What he did win was attention: his pre-fight verbal assaults became as anticipated as the bouts themselves. After his last fight with Bellator, he pivoted to the microphone full-time, joining ESPN as an MMA analyst in 2014, launching his own grappling promotion Submission Underground in 2016, and eventually taking the lead commentary role for Real American Freestyle wrestling. The trash talk, it turned out, was the through line all along.
