He won Alexander the Great's empire the old way: by murdering the heir. Cassander turned Macedonia into his own kingdom after a decade of warlord chaos, then spent twenty years fortifying borders and building cities while history remembered him mostly for the killing.
Cassander was born around 355 BC, son of Antipater, and grew up alongside Alexander the Great. When Alexander died in 323 BC, Cassander became one of the Diadochi—the generals who tore the empire apart fighting over the pieces. He seized control of southern Greece in 317 BC and secured it by having Alexander's son and heir, Alexander IV, murdered.
