Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw, performing as Caro Emerald, began her career in 2007 and surfaced properly two years later with "Back It Up", a debut single that turned heads. Follow-up track "A Night Like This" topped charts across Europe, including the Netherlands, and set the stage for Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor in January 2010. By August that album had claimed 30 weeks at number one on the Dutch charts - an all-time record, one week longer than Michael Jackson's Thriller - and earned her the Edison Award for Best Female Artist that October. The Shocking Miss Emerald arrived in 2013 and opened at number one in both the Netherlands and the UK, confirming that the first album wasn't a fluke.
