King of Portugal from 1889 to 1908 (1863–1908)
Portugal's penultimate monarch, shot dead in Lisbon in 1908 — the first violent royal death in over three centuries and the only assassination of a Portuguese king.
Born Carlos Fernando Luís Maria Víctor Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga Xavier Francisco de Assis José Simão on 28 September 1863, he inherited the throne in 1889 and ruled under the nicknames "the Diplomat" and "the Oceanographer." His reign lasted nineteen years, ending abruptly on 1 February 1908 when assassins struck. The killing broke a 330-year span since King Sebastian's violent death in 1578 and remains the sole regicide in Portuguese history.
