King of the Franks (r. 768–771)
The Frankish king whose early death handed his older brother Charlemagne an empire. Had he lived past forty, the map of medieval Europe might look different.
Born 28 June 751, Carloman was the second surviving son of Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon. In 768 he became king of the Franks alongside his older brother Charlemagne, the two splitting their father's realm. The arrangement lasted three years. Carloman died on 4 December 771, and with him went any check on Charlemagne's ambition. His brother absorbed his half of Francia whole, and the consolidation set the stage for the empire that followed.
