King of Anshan in Iran from c. 580 to 559 BC and the father of Cyrus the Great
He ruled a corner of ancient Persia and fathered the man who would turn it into an empire. Cambyses I held Anshan for two decades while his son Cyrus prepared to rewrite the map.
Cambyses I was king of Anshan from around 580 to 559 BC, younger son of Cyrus I and brother of Arukku. His reign over the small kingdom passed quietly enough that history remembers him mostly through his son. That son was Cyrus the Great, who would take what his father left and build the Achaemenid Empire. Cambyses I died before the conquests began, his name now a footnote easily confused with his grandson Cambyses II, who actually wore the imperial crown.
