Born near Pittsburgh, he graduated from David B. Oliver High School in Pittsburgh in June 1957 and Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania, in 1962. Calvin Fowler at David B. Oliver High School scored 61 points in a 101-35 win over Allegheny Vocational. Oliver only led 27-20 at the half on Fowler's 22 points, but Fowler poured in 39 in the final two quarters.
