Brittney Griner was the nation's top high school player in 2009 and became the only NCAA athlete to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots, leading Baylor to a national title in 2012 as AP Player of the Year. The Phoenix Mercury took her first overall in the 2013 draft, and she won a WNBA championship the next season. She collected Olympic golds in 2016, 2021, and 2024, plus two World Cup titles. In February 2022, Russian customs arrested her for hash oil in her luggage while she was playing overseas during the off-season. Sentenced to nine years that August, she was freed in December when the U.S. exchanged Viktor Bout for her release. Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in 2023.
