Medieval hagiographies place her birth around 451, daughter of an Irish clan chief and an enslaved Christian woman, fostered in a druid's household before taking vows as a consecrated virgin. She founded the abbey of Kildare and several other convents, becoming abbess and eventually patroness of poetry, healing, blacksmithing, livestock, and dairy production.
