Russian Tsar (1598–1605)
He steered Russia for thirteen years as the power behind the throne, then took the crown himself when the Rurik line died out — only to watch the state collapse into the Time of Troubles.
Boris Godunov served as de facto regent from 1585 to 1598, running the country while Tsar Feodor I held the title. When Feodor died in 1598, the Rurik dynasty — which had ruled for centuries — ended with him. Godunov stepped into the vacuum and claimed the throne himself, ruling as tsar until his death in 1605. His reign closed not with consolidation but with the onset of the Time of Troubles, a spiral of crisis that would grip Russia for years.
