Robert Elmer Cowell was an American competition swimmer, who competed for the U.S. Naval Academy, a 1948 Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter backstroke, a 1948 world record holder in the 100-yard backstroke, and a U.S. Navy officer. Cowell served as a U.S. Navy flyer in the Korean conflict.
