About this person
Bjarke Bundgaard Ingels was born 2 October 1974 in Denmark. He broke through designing two housing complexes in Ørestad - VM Houses and Mountain Dwellings - that bent the language of residential architecture into something stranger. In 2006 he founded Bjarke Ingels Group, which swelled to 400 people by 2015 and began landing projects that read like provocations: the 8 House complex, VIA 57 West in Manhattan, Google's North Bayshore headquarters with Thomas Heatherwick, and the Amager Resource Center waste-to-energy plant with a ski slope and climbing wall grafted onto its exterior. He moved to New York in 2012, the same year BIG won a post-Sandy competition to reimagine Manhattan's flood defenses. The Wall Street Journal named him Innovator of the Year for architecture in 2011; Time put him on its 100 Most Influential list in 2016.
