She married into power at the dawn of a dynasty that would last three centuries, becoming the second queen of Ptolemaic Egypt after Ptolemy I set aside his first wife.
Born around 340 BC, Berenice became Queen of Egypt through her marriage to Ptolemy I Soter, the Macedonian general who carved out Egypt from Alexander the Great's shattered empire. She followed Eurydice as the second queen of the newly established Ptolemaic dynasty. Her reign as queen consort spanned the foundation years of a royal line that would rule Egypt until Cleopatra. She died sometime between 279 and 268 BC, having witnessed her husband transform a conquered province into a kingdom.
