She sought political asylum in the United States where she successfully applied citing persecution in her home country. Almost two decades later, in 2013, a US court prosecuted Beatrice for lying about her political affiliation during the Rwandan genocide. She was stripped of her American citizenship, imprisoned and eventually deported back to Rwanda, where she was given a life sentence.
