About this person
Bassem Youssef was born 21 March 1974 and trained as a cardiothoracic surgeon before the 2011 Egyptian revolution pulled him toward a different kind of precision. He launched Al Bernameg as a satirical news program that ran from 2011 to 2014, drawing audiences across the region with a format that held power to account through comedy. The legal and political pressure mounted until late 2014, when he left Egypt for the United States. He hosted the 43rd International Emmy Awards in 2015, appeared in the 2017 documentary Tickling Giants, and published his memoir Revolution for Dummies the same year. Beginning in late 2023, his pro-Palestinian advocacy during the Gaza war brought him back into global view, this time through high-profile media debates on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
