Biography

About

A Nazi Party member at 18, Schirach was named the party's national youth leader in 1931 and elected to the Reichstag a year later. When Hitler took power in 1933, he became Youth Leader of the German Reich, controlling all youth organizations in the country. He served briefly as an infantryman in the French Campaign in 1940, earning the Iron Cross, then was appointed Gauleiter of Vienna while Artur Axmann took over the Hitler Youth. As Vienna's governor, the virulent antisemite organized the deportation of 65,000 Viennese Jews to camps in occupied Poland. He fled the Red Army advance in April…
