Basappa Danappa Jatti was born on 10 September 1912. He started in local government as a municipality member and worked his way through the ranks over decades. He served as chief minister of Karnataka before ascending to the vice presidency of India in 1974. When the presidency fell vacant in early 1977, Jatti stepped in as acting president from 11 February to 25 July that year. He remained vice president until 1979. He died on 7 June 2002.
