Avril Haines

Avril Danica Haines is an American lawyer who served as the Director of National Intelligence in the Biden administration. She is the first woman to serve in this role. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor and deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the Obama administration. Prior to her appointment to the CIA, she was deputy counsel to the President for national security affairs. On June 11, 2026, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace announced that she would succeed Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, beginning in September 2026.
