Auguste Marie François Beernaert was born on 26 July 1829. He served as prime minister of Belgium from October 1884 to March 1894, holding office through nearly a full decade of European political shifts. After leaving government, he turned to international arbitration and peace advocacy. That work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1909, three years before his death on 6 October 1912.
