About

Born in Strasbourg on 22 October 1949 and raised in Duttlenheim, Arsène Wenger learned the game from his father, who managed the village team. A modest playing career as a midfielder at clubs including FC Mulhouse and RC Strasbourg led to a manager's diploma in 1981. He began managing at Nancy in 1984, moved to Monaco in 1987 — winning the French league and Coupe de France in 1991 — then spent a season in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight, collecting an Emperor's Cup. Appointed Arsenal manager in 1996, he met English scepticism and answered it by winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1…
