Arnon Nampa

Arnon Nampa is a Thai lawyer and activist known for his critical stance on the Thai monarchy, a highly controversial topic in the country. Initially celebrated as a leading human rights defender, Nampa's involvement in pro-democracy movements has led to numerous criminal charges. He became a key figure in the 2020–2021 Thai protests, advocating for unprecedented reforms to the monarchy led by non-elite groups. In 2020, Nampa was detained without trial for 24 days. Following Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha's directive in November 2020 to enforce all applicable laws, including lèse-majesté, against demonstrators, Nampa's detention was extended to 110 days. After being released on bail in June 2021, he was detained again from 9 August 2021, to 27 February 2022, resulting in a total of 203 days without trial during this period, and 337 days of detention between 2020 and 2022.
