Arnold Rüütel was born on 10 May 1928 in Estonia, long before the Soviet occupation that would define much of his life. When independence was restored on 20 August 1991, he emerged as the second president of the reborn republic. A decade passed. On 8 October 2001, he returned to the office as Estonia's third president, holding it until 9 October 2006. He died on 31 December 2024, having witnessed both the country's erasure and its return.
