Arisztid Dessewffy

Arisztid Dessewffy de Csernek et Tarkő was a general in the Hungarian Honvéd Army during the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–1849. A member of the Hungarian nobility, he served with distinction in several campaigns against both Austrian and Russian forces. Dessewffy commanded an army of roughly 100,000 men but eventually surrendered in the face of overwhelming Russian superiority, an act that spared his troops from unnecessary bloodshed.
