About

Born in Lisbon in 1949, António Guterres studied physics and electrical engineering, taught briefly, then pivoted to politics through a Catholic youth group. He led Portugal's Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002 and served as prime minister from 1995 to 2002, winning two elections before resigning after local losses and losing the next general election to José Manuel Barroso. Polls later named him the country's best prime minister in three decades. He chaired the Socialist International, then spent a decade as UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015, overhauling the agency amid casca…
