Bourdain graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978 and worked his way through professional kitchens, eventually spending several years as executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan. In the late 1990s The New Yorker published an essay that launched his writing career and made his point-blank tone a trademark - a year later came Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, a 2000 New York Times bestseller that cracked the industry open. A Cook's Tour ran 35 episodes on the Food Network from 2002 to 2003, then in 2005 he moved to the Travel Channel for Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005 - 2012) and The Layover (2011 - 2013). In 2013 he switched to CNN for Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown while also spending three seasons as a judge on The Taste. On June 8, 2018, while filming Parts Unknown in France, he died by suicide.
