Ante Pavelić began as a lawyer and Croatian nationalist politician in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the 1920s, calling for independence and plotting an Italian-backed breakaway state. After King Alexander banned political parties in 1929, Pavelić fled abroad and founded the Ustaše, a movement that used bombings and assassinations, culminating in the 1934 killing of the king himself. Sentenced to death twice in absentia, he spent years in Fascist Italy until the Germans installed him as Poglavnik of the puppet NDH in April 1941. His regime imposed anti-Serbian, anti-Semitic, and anti-Roma laws that killed hundreds of thousands in Ustaše-run camps and forced mass conversions of Orthodox Christians to Catholicism. When Germany surrendered in May 1945, Pavelić kept fighting, then fled through Austria with a Vatican passport to Argentina, where he advised Juan Perón and continued fascist organizing. Shot in Buenos Aires in April 1957, he escaped to Franco's Spain and died in Madrid in December 1959 from complications of the wounds.
