Bolognese painter (1560–1609)
He helped ignite the Baroque by fusing northern and southern traditions into something monumental and visceral — then trained a generation of painters in Rome whose work would echo for decades.
Annibale Carracci was born November 3, 1560, and worked first in Bologna alongside his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico. Together they pioneered a strand of Baroque painting that borrowed from styles north and south of their city, seeking classical monumentality but laced with a more vital dynamism. Annibale later moved to Rome, where he directed work at the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese. The painters who trained under him there became highly influential in Roman painting for decades. He died July 15, 1609.
