Born 18 September 1971, Netrebko was discovered and promoted by conductor Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre, where she began her career in close collaboration with him. The world took notice in 2002 when she played Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival. She built her early reputation on lyric and coloratura soprano roles, but later moved into weightier 19th-century romantic territory — Leonora in Il trovatore, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth.
