Anna Kournikova was born in Moscow on 7 June 1981 and turned pro in a sport where she would reach No. 8 in the world without ever claiming a singles trophy. The real silverware came in doubles: partnered with Martina Hingis, she won the Australian Open in 1999 and 2002, plus back-to-back WTA Championships - the pair called themselves the "Spice Girls of Tennis." By 2000 her fame had outgrown the results, driven by appearance and celebrity in a way the sport had rarely seen. Chronic back and spinal problems, including a herniated disk, ended her professional career in 2003 at 22. She settled in Miami Beach, played occasional exhibitions and a stint with the St. Louis Aces, then pivoted to television as a trainer on season 12 of The Biggest Loser before moving on. She also works as a Global Ambassador for Population Services International, focusing on child and family health in the developing world.
