She made YouTube videos about sexist tropes in video games and became the center of one of the internet's ugliest harassment campaigns - turning a Kickstarter into a flashpoint for arguments about who gets to play, who gets to critique, and what happens when you say the industry could do better.

Why are [...] female characters in combat roles wearing high-heels?

If you want to get to know a character, learn about their interests, goals or desires, their butt is probably not going to give you that information.

For this video I tried to get a glimpse of Batman's rear end, but it's as if his cape is a piece of high-tech Wayne-Industries equipment designed to cover up his butt at all costs.

About this person

Anita Sarkeesian founded Feminist Frequency to analyze how women appear in popular culture, then narrowed the lens to video games. In 2012 she launched a Kickstarter to fund Tropes vs. Women in Video Games - a series examining recurring patterns in how female characters are written and rendered. The project triggered an immediate harassment campaign: threats, coordinated attacks, the full machinery of online rage. The backlash had the opposite effect: media attention surged, the funding goal was crushed, and Sarkeesian became the face of a broader conversation about misogyny in gaming culture. She took the story to TEDxWomen, XOXO, The Colbert Report, and eventually the United Nations, framing it as a test case for what happens when criticism meets an industry unused to hearing it.
