About this person

Born 28 June 1994, Giri locked in the grandmaster requirements at 14 years, 7 months and 2 days, marking him as one of the quickest ascents in the game. He switched from Russia to represent the Netherlands in 2009 and has since claimed the Dutch championship five times (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2023) while competing at seven Olympiads. His rating earned him spots in the 2016 and 2020 Candidates Tournaments, and in 2023 he won the Tata Steel Chess Tournament - only the fourth Dutch player to do so since 1968. In September 2025 he took the FIDE Grand Swiss, punching his ticket to the 2026 Candidates and keeping his run at the sport's summit alive.
