The only president impeached for trying to undo Reconstruction. Andrew Johnson inherited Lincoln's office in 1865 and spent four years pardoning Confederates, blocking rights for freed slaves, and warring with Congress until the House charged him — he survived removal by a single Senate vote.

Biography

About

Born into poverty in 1808, never saw the inside of a school, apprenticed as a tailor. Worked his way from alderman in Greeneville, Tennessee, through the state legislature to Congress in 1843, then governor, then U.S. senator by 1857. When Tennessee seceded in 1861 he alone among Southern senators refused to resign his seat, a defiant Unionist. Lincoln made him military governor of occupied Tennessee in 1862 and chose him as running mate in 1864 to signal reconciliation.
