He turned the harp electric and made it strange - swirling, atmospheric, closer to a synthesizer than a concert hall. The Swiss player built his own instrument and rode the new-age wave to a Grammy, collaborating with McFerrin and Pavarotti along the way.

About this person

Andreas Vollenweider was born 4 October 1953 in Switzerland. He modified the harp - electroacoustic, his own design - and used it to craft what The New York Times called "swirling atmospheric music, which evokes nature, magic and fairy tales". The sound landed him in the new-age bin, but the collaborators came calling anyway: Bobby McFerrin, Carly Simon, Luciano Pavarotti. In 1987 he won a Grammy for Down to the Moon. He'd taken an ancient instrument, rewired it, and found an audience that wanted to drift.
