French businessman (1878-1935)
He turned gears into a signature and a car company into a monument to his own name — then lost both before he died.
André-Gustave Citroën was born 5 February 1878, a French industrialist who would leave two marks: the double helical gear and the automaker that carried his surname. He founded Citroën, building it into a force in French manufacturing with the same mechanical precision he'd applied to those gears. The company rose, the name spread, but the man didn't outlast his creation. He died 3 July 1935, his empire already slipping from his hands.
