Ancus Marcius came to power through the Roman assembly after the Senate appointed an interrex following Tullus Hostilius's death. His reign, measured at 24 years by tradition, tried to marry opposites: he waged war in the style of Romulus, Rome's founder, while simultaneously advancing peace and religious practice as Numa Pompilius had done before him. The balancing act defined his legacy. Many Romans later believed he gave his name to the Marcii, a plebeian family that carried the connection forward through the Republic.
