Alphonso Taft was an American jurist, diplomat, and politician who served as United States attorney general and secretary of war under President Ulysses S. Grant. He was also the founder of the Taft political dynasty, and father of Congressman Charles Phelps Taft and President William Howard Taft, and the grandfather of Senator Robert A. Taft.
