Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail was born on 3 October 1804 in France and spent his early career as an educator, translator, and writer. At midlife he adopted the pseudonym Allan Kardec and began attending séances, convinced the spirits speaking through mediums were offering systematic truths about the afterlife. He compiled their messages into five books - the Spiritist Codification - laying out reincarnation, moral progress, and communication with the dead as core tenets. That framework became Spiritism, a movement he founded and led until his death on 31 March 1869. The doctrine he formalized at a parlor table now shapes the faith of millions.
