Alexander Wang was born December 26, 1983, and launched his own label in 2005 with a look rooted in the streets rather than the salon. In 2008 the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund named him the winner, a validation that pushed the brand from cult favorite to industry fixture. His palette leaned hard on black, his silhouettes on a kind of casual severity that felt more nightclub than runway. From November 2012 through July 2015 he held the creative director post at Balenciaga, steering a storied European house with the same downtown instinct. When that chapter closed he returned full-time to the label that still carries his name.
